Statement on Club Ownership

22nd Feb 2018

Sumrith “Tiger” Thanakarnjanasuth has today become the majority shareholder and new Chairman of Oxford United, with Darryl Eales stepping down, while retaining a minority shareholding and involvement with the football club.

OxVox would like to welcome Tiger to our football club. He takes over at a time when the club faces a number of key challenges on and off the field. We look forward to hearing Tiger’s plans and to working with him for the good of Oxford United and its supporters.

Our new Thai owner joins a club whose fans are eager for it to build on the recent successes, and will offer their wholehearted support to any owner that shares their ambitions to see a progressive football club that OUFC fans and the wider community can be proud of.

This is an apt moment to pay tribute to Darryl Eales and the huge contribution he has made to our club during his chairmanship. We have seen the first team’s success in league and cup competitions as well as promotion to League One, all of which were achieved with a huge emphasis on professional infrastructure development and in all aspects of player recruitment, coupled with an exciting playing style. We have also seen extensive developments and success in women’s football, youth football and community work.  OxVox is pleased that Darryl’s skill and expertise will be available to Tiger and we trust that he will build on what has been achieved.

In recent weeks OxVox has held meetings with Tiger and Darryl which have of necessity remained commercially confidential. We acknowledge that this has been frustrating for supporters and trust members. We have however had the opportunity to ask questions. Inevitably, further questions will arise, and we will seek opportunities in the coming weeks to continue the dialogue with Tiger.
