Over Christmas the Blue Square Premier fixture list was severely hit by bad weather. The annual Boxing Day fixture is traditionally one of the most anticipated matches of the season. Almost 10,000 fans were expected to attend the game. Both club and fans were bitterly disappointed that the game was unable to go ahead, and the players were looking forward to playing in front of a massive crowd.

So OxVox is today calling on United fans to show that it doesn’t need to be Boxing Day to attract a huge crowd! The last time Oxford had a large crowd the atmosphere was electric and Oxford were rewarded with a memorable win over promotion rivals Luton.

On 13 February, the U’s entertain Histon in a match that is being billed as Boxing Day 2. We are urging as many fans to come to the game as possible to recreate that attendance and special atmosphere.

We are encouraging to fans who would have attended the original Boxing Day fixture to attend Boxing Day 2 to bring along their relatives and friends, and to help cheer the U’s on to another three points closer to promotion.

OxVox committee member Graham Cripps said:

“We know how disappointed the club and the fans were when the original Boxing Day game was postponed. But why should we let the weather rob us all of such a great occasion? So we are calling on the fans to show that it doesn’t need to be Christmas to attract a massive home crowd.

“We hope this game will give fans the chance to celebrate what has been a terrific year for Oxford United and is promising to be one of the club’s most memorable seasons. It would be fantastic if we could get a big crowd for this game and give the players and fans a chance to enjoy a great atmosphere.”

Oxford United Chairman Kelvin Thomas added:

“Once again our fans show what amazing spirit there is within this football club. Being able to turn such a positive from a pretty disappointing day, and I think Graham is spot on with his thinking here, and it's great to see the support this idea has already gained.

“Obviously the club is fully behind this, and it will be something special for the players to possibly see a huge crowd at this game.”
